La Lomita Mission
sdc10744.jpg

In this photo, you see the picture of an old mission named La Lomita Mission, located in Mission, Texas.  As you can see this is an old building made out of stone. La Lomita was built in 1865 by Missionary Oblates of Immaculate. Its structure almost symbolizes almost a chathedral but in a smaller version due to its steep arched roof. This mission was an important stop between the church's Brownsville headquarters and the Roma Mission trail. The little chapel was destroyed by flood waters and in 1899 a new chapel was constructed.  Today, La Lomita Historic Distric reminds us of the importance of missions in the settlement of this region of Texas.  In 1912, The Missionary Oblates constructed St. Peters Novitiate on the top of the hill (next photo). The building was used a training center for student priests until the 1950's.

St. Joseph & St. Peter's Seminary

This photo is of St. Joseph and St. Peter's Seminary. This old historic building was built in 1912. As you can see this is a beautiful building also symbolizing a cathedral or maybe even Gothic look due to its tall arched roof. I was not able to go near the building due to its restriction from public view, but from where I stood it seems to me the building is also made out of stone. I wish I could give more detail as to the structure on the inside but I bet it is beautiful thru the inside as it is on the outside. This building is said to be haunted by the mission's heyday priests.  They were rumored to be having intercourse with the nuns and burying the children's bodies on the grounds.  One night some illegal immigrants, who were aware of what was going on, went in and killed two of the priests.  The third priest went to get help, but died while searching.  The robes and bones of the priets were on display up until a couple of years ago.  Thereafter, it became an asylum for the mentally challenged.  Many people working there reported seeing figures in robes walking around the grounds at night.  The asylum shut down completely due to the hauntings.

New Basilica of Our Lady Shrine Del Valle

This photo is of Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle Shrine built in the 1980's after the Old Shrine was destroyed by fire (next photo). This wonderful center of prayer represents the way Rio Grande Valley's version of the faith which has been handed down thru many generations.  Captured in icons of brilliant mosaic, stained glass and polished stone, the shrine expresses the simple yet inexhaustible story of God dwelling amongst us.

Old Basilica of Our Lady Shrine Del Valle

This photograph represents the Old Basilica of Our Lady Shrine Del Valle located in San Juan Texas and built in 1954. This another beautiful work of art that seems to have been made out of stone as well. I was not able to go inside the building so its structure thru the inside is unknown to me. The shrine was shut down after a fire destroyed it in the 1970's.  Fortunately, the statue of the Virgen de San Juan de Los Lagos survived the ordeal in a newer and larger shrine (previous photo).
